A Dematic Case Study
The University of Chicago Library faced a critical storage challenge, with its collection of 7 million volumes expected to functionally fill its main libraries by 2007. A dedicated research team was formed to find an expansion solution that would keep the entire collection on campus and readily accessible. After evaluating numerous options, the university selected the Automated Library System (ALS) from vendor Dematic as the ideal solution to meet its key goals.
Dematic's ALS solution was implemented in the new underground Mansueto Library, utilizing robotic cranes to automatically retrieve items stored in bins and deliver them to one of 12 picking stations. This system provided over 50% higher storage capacity compared to conventional shelving, with any item accessible in under five minutes. The solution also perfectly maintained environmental controls for archival materials and cost approximately one-third the price of a conventional expansion, securing the library's world-class reputation for accessibility.
