Transcontinental Printing, a large Canadian printing conglomerate, required an automated solution to modernize the production processes for Montreal's La Presse newspaper. They partnered with vendor Dematic to implement a high-density automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) for paper rolls to minimize the system's footprint and optimize material flow to the new press.

Dematic provided a unique one-aisle system featuring a double-deep shuttle fork designed specifically for handling newspaper rolls. This solution doubled storage capacity and included high-speed roll delivery to the press. The results included a significant reduction in manual labor, minimized risk of roll damage, and the ability to maintain consistent staffing levels. The fully automated Dematic system provided complete inventory control and ensured the right rolls were delivered to the correct press towers efficiently.
