Transcontinental Printing - Customer Case Study

Transcontinental Printing, a company that provides outsourced printing services, sought to build a highly automated, greenfield production facility for the San Francisco Chronicle. Their challenge was to create a system that could significantly lower the cost of printing, assembling, and distributing newspapers by minimizing waste and maximizing accuracy. To achieve this, they engaged vendor Dematic to provide the material handling solutions for paper rolls and advertising inserts.

Dematic implemented an automated system featuring a high-bay ASRS for storage, specialized conveyors, and laser-guided vehicles. The solution was supported by Dematic's proprietary Equipment Management Software and Material Tracking and Control Software, which integrated with the press control system. This resulted in a dramatic reduction in paper waste, increased accuracy in ad placement, and provided a robust, predictable automation platform designed for future growth. The system from Dematic gave Transcontinental a significant overall reduction in production costs for its customer.
