The Schwan Food Company sought to improve operational efficiency, decrease costs, and better serve its primary retail customers at its Suwanee, Georgia distribution center. To address this challenge, the company partnered with vendor Dematic for the design and integration of an automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS).

Dematic implemented a solution featuring a five-aisle rack structure and five unit load storage and retrieval machines (SRMs) to handle inventory. The integrated conveyor system and controls were designed to manage storage, retrieval, and the efficient movement of orders to 26 outbound shipping lanes. This Dematic system provided Schwan's with real-time inventory management, improved truck loading efficiency, and the ability to pre-pick and store orders up to 24 hours in advance of shipment.
