Santa Clara University required a modern solution to house its 1.3 million-volume library collection while saving significant space to create more student-friendly areas. The university partnered with Dematic to implement an Automated Library System (ALS) and its Document Management Software to provide secure, high-density storage with rapid automated retrieval.

The Dematic ALS solution utilized a three-aisle storage system with robotic retrieval machines, interfacing seamlessly with the library's existing circulation software. This allowed the vast majority of materials to be retrieved in under five minutes and saved over six-sevenths of the space required by conventional open shelving. This space savings enabled the creation of new study and collaborative areas, and the ALS building was constructed at a significantly lower cost than a traditional open-stack facility. Dematic's system also provides a controlled environment for preservation and ensures nearly 100% inventory accuracy.
