Procter & Gamble - Customer Case Study

Procter & Gamble faced a significant challenge at its Joppa, Maryland distribution center, where the aging control system for its full-case picking operation was no longer supported. With components at risk of failure and critical spares unavailable, the operation was vulnerable to disruptive downtime. To eliminate this risk and support future expansion, P&G selected vendor Dematic to upgrade the system's controls and architecture.

Dematic implemented a comprehensive solution, designing and installing a new control system based on its CHEC modules and a Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLC platform, alongside a new pick-to-light system. The project was executed with minimal disruption, requiring only one planned day of downtime. The results were substantial: a 20% increase in throughput, a 57% reduction in downtime, and annual labor savings of approximately $200,000. Dematic's upgrade dramatically reduced errors and significantly improved the operation's reliability and supportability.
