A Dematic Case Study
The Oviatt Library at California State University, Northridge faced a critical challenge of limited physical space for its expanding collection of books and journals. Library administrators needed an economically feasible high-density storage solution for less frequently used materials without compromising access for patrons. They turned to the vendor Dematic for an automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS).
Dematic implemented a solution using six mini-load automated storage/retrieval systems. This system stores books in a highly compact footprint, using about one-twelfth the space of conventional storage. Upon a user's request from the online catalog, books can be retrieved and delivered to the circulation desk in under ten minutes. The result is that the library can now ultimately house 950,000 less frequently used volumes in just 8,000 square feet, freeing up open stacks for the materials that receive the most patron use.
