A Dematic Case Study
Macquarie University sought to build a new library that would symbolize its global aspirations and provide a 21st-century learning environment. The challenge was to create a modern facility with extensive study spaces while also finding an innovative way to house 1.8 million library items in a space-efficient and sustainable manner, aiming for a Green Star Five-Star rating.
The vendor, Dematic, implemented its Automated Library System (ALS), the first of its kind in an Australian library. This high-density storage and retrieval system, managed by Dematic's Document Management Software, drastically reduced the required building footprint by 38%, saving over 11,000 square meters. The solution allows staff to retrieve materials in under five minutes and enabled the university to reallocate the saved space to student-friendly areas. The project also achieved significant cost savings, with the ALS building costing one-seventh of an equivalent conventional building.
