DOT Foods, a food industry redistributor, sought to overcome challenges with its manual Planned Item Retrieval (PIR) operations for slow-moving inventory in its freezer. Their existing process was inefficient, labor-intensive, and created a congested, cold work environment. They partnered with vendor Dematic to implement an automated solution to provide dense storage and improve operational efficiency.

Dematic implemented an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) featuring three aisles of high-density racking serviced by storage and retrieval machines. This solution provided dense storage to lower refrigeration costs, increased inventory accuracy, and significantly reduced labor. The system allows order selection to occur outside the freezer in a labor-friendly environment, successfully meeting DOT Foods' objectives to eliminate congestion and minimize the workforce required for PIR activities.
