Detroit Newspapers - Customer Case Study

Detroit Newspapers, a joint operating agent for major publications, required a new 24/7 automated system with full redundancy to handle and control pre-printed inserts, transporting them from dock doors to insertion equipment across two floors. To meet this challenge, they partnered with Dematic to implement a solution centered on an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS).

Dematic designed a custom system featuring two high-speed storage and retrieval machines and eight automated guided vehicles (AGVs) for transportation. This AGV-based solution provided greater routing flexibility, eliminated single points of failure, and kept floor space open. The implementation by Dematic was highly successful, reducing the overall system cost by one third while meeting the demanding operational requirements.
