BIG W’s DC features Australia’s first Multishuttle GTP system

BIG W, a major Australian general merchandise retailer, faced the challenge of supporting its business growth and a new online channel. It required a third distribution center to restructure its supply chain, a complex process that involved stock allocation across the network. To address this, BIG W partnered with Dematic to design a new facility.

Dematic implemented a solution featuring Australia's first Multishuttle automated storage and retrieval system and RapidPick goods-to-person order fulfilment stations. This technology enabled a single operator to process up to 24 orders concurrently, dramatically increasing pick rates to 500 units per hour per station from a previous rate of 120. The successful implementation resulted in a highly efficient DC with no major downtime, allowing BIG W to serve all its stores from day one.
