A DELMIA Quintiq Case Study
Marquis, a logistics group with roots in agricultural products, ethanol and grain transport, expanded in 2012 into crude oil logistics, moving Bakken crude by train to a Hayti, Missouri terminal and then by barge to refineries on the lower Mississippi. Rapid production growth swelled arrivals from about three unit trains a month to 30, overwhelming their whiteboard-and-spreadsheet scheduling; with only two tracks, two tanks and 550,000 barrels of storage, planners faced severe bottlenecks, high demurrage and missed opportunities.
Marquis selected Quintiq’s integrated rail-and-barge planning platform, which was implemented in under two weeks and fully operational after a few months. The solution gives granular, visual scheduling and what-if analysis, optimizes tank and asset cycling, cuts demurrage and costs, improves turn times and enables smarter bidding and strategic forecasting—allowing Marquis to capture more business and scale profitably.
