Alpro protects its ‘lone workers’ with AI technology

Alpro, the plant-based food company, wanted to better protect lone workers inside its Wevelgem factory tower, where employees often work alone on stairs and near machinery, creating a safety risk if someone falls or is injured unnoticed. Existing hourly DECT phone check-ins led to delays and false alarms, so Alpro worked with delaware BeLux to find a more reliable way to monitor worker safety.

delaware BeLux helped Alpro use machine learning-based fall detection on employees’ smartphones, leveraging built-in sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes. After a hackathon and test data collection, the model reached 88% accuracy in detecting falls versus no-falls, and 84% accuracy in a multiclass setup that also included safety concerns. The solution was designed to improve response time while protecting privacy through short-term incident analysis and longer-term anonymized data storage.
