How Genoa, IL Uses DeepWalk for Sidewalk Inspections

The city of Genoa, Illinois, needed a modern solution for assessing its 28-mile sidewalk network to support the development of a long-term maintenance program. The public works department's traditional inspection methods were time-consuming and difficult to update, making it a challenge to plan for and implement pedestrian safety improvements. To address this, Genoa partnered with vendor DeepWalk and used its iPhone LiDAR-based inspection software.

DeepWalk's solution involved scanning the sidewalks with city-owned iPhones and processing the data through its automated measurement and web application platform. This provided Genoa with a detailed condition assessment, an average accessibility score, and specific recommendations for improvement programs. The measurable impact included the immediate implementation of a program to replace deteriorated panels and the city's public works department receiving an Asset Management Award from the American Public Works Association for its advanced practices.
