NHS finds 781 additional stage 1-2 lung cancers with DeepHealth

The NHS sought to test a large-scale, real-world lung health check programme to diagnose lung cancer earlier, following promising small-scale trials. The challenge was to replicate successful earlier diagnostic staging results across a much larger population while understanding the real-world delivery challenges. The programme utilized technology from vendor DeepHealth, including their Chest Suite AI applications.

DeepHealth's solution supported the programme, which issued over 1.22 million invitations and performed 163,000 CT scans. This led to the diagnosis of 2,748 lung cancers, with an estimated 781 additional cancers detected at the early stages 1 or 2 because of the programme. A robust impact analysis confirmed DeepHealth's solution was effective in meeting its core objectives, successfully replicating the positive staging results from previous smaller pilots on a large scale.
