University Of Miami - Customer Case Study

The University of Miami’s Center for Computational Science needed to support more than 2,000 researchers across highly data-intensive projects in genomics, medicine, climate science, and other fields. Its challenge was managing massive compute and storage demands, heavy I/O, and “data-in-flight” surges while keeping research workflows fast and flexible. DDN provided an end-to-end GRIDScaler solution, including a GS12K scale-out appliance with an embedded IBM GPFS parallel file system.

With DDN, the University of Miami centralized storage, simplified data movement, and supported both high-performance and interactive workloads through a single platform. The results were significant: genomics workflow time dropped from 72 hours to 17 hours, a 400% faster pace for some research, and the center enabled discoveries such as links between certain viruses and gastrointestinal cancers. DDN also helped the university scale to nearly a petabyte of TCGA data without added complexity.
