A DDN Case Study
University College London needed a safe, resilient way to store, share, reuse, and preserve rapidly growing project-based research data without forcing researchers to manage their own storage. The university also had to support diverse data types, improve collaboration, and meet strict long-term preservation requirements from funding bodies, all at a scale that could serve thousands of researchers.
DDN implemented a scalable storage solution using GRIDScaler, WOS, and iRODS to create a high-performance, policy-driven file and object storage platform. The result was simplified infrastructure management, stronger collaboration, and better data durability and disaster recovery, with the solution proven in a half-petabyte pilot and designed to scale to 100PB. UCL also expected hundreds of thousands of UK pounds in savings by eliminating the need for thousands of researchers to maintain their own storage hardware.
