A DDN Case Study
HLRN, the North German Supercomputing Alliance, needed to keep pace with growing demand from more than 300 researchers across seven states while balancing compute power with high-bandwidth storage for data-intensive scientific workloads. The organization also needed fast, reliable data sharing between its sites in Berlin and Hanover, plus storage tiers for temporary, home, and long-term data.
DDN implemented a distributed peta-scale storage environment using DDN SFA12K-40 with Lustre and DDN GRIDScaler with IBM GPFS, tightly integrated with HLRN’s Cray XC30 supercomputing platform. The result was nearly four times greater bandwidth performance, aggregate bandwidth above 50 GB/s, support for 4 PB of storage at RRZN with a path to 10 PB, and improved reliability, snapshots, and lower power and cooling costs.
