CINECA, one of Italy’s leading high-performance computing centers, needed a way to complete urgent computing workloads such as tsunami forecasting within a much smaller time window. Previously, forecasts could take about 20 minutes after detection, creating a critical delay for evacuation planning, so CINECA turned to DDN and its EXAScaler software to boost speed and efficiency.

With DDN EXAScaler, CINECA’s Leonardo cluster can now complete tsunami forecasts in about 5 minutes. DDN helped improve forecasting turnaround time by 400%, raise GPU utilization to 99%, and make Leonardo the #1 ranked supercomputer for bandwidth on the IO500 list.
