Watercare builds a resilient and scalable data warehouse with dbt Cloud

Watercare, a water and wastewater utility serving more than 1.7 million people in Auckland, New Zealand, needed a better way to manage the terabytes of data it generated across siloed legacy systems. With unclear data lineage, limited modeling and transformation capabilities, and no easy way to trust or troubleshoot its information, Watercare turned to dbt Labs and dbt Cloud to modernize its analytics environment.

Using dbt Cloud, Watercare built trusted data models, added testing and documentation, and connected its CI/CD workflows to improve governance and collaboration. The result was a scalable, resilient data warehouse that supported self-service analytics, machine learning, and operational dashboards—including tracking 30,000 smart meters in one dashboard—and helped the team increase the number of data models produced in a year by 7x.
