Fortune 500 oil & gas company abandons the enterprise data warehouse in pursuit of self-service analytics

Devon Energy, a Fortune 500 oil and gas company, needed a better way to democratize analytics beyond its centrally managed enterprise data warehouse (EDW). The company had grown dependent on a small team of experts to maintain complex models, manage dependencies, and support reporting across more than 70 operational systems, limiting self-service and slowing business analysis.

To enable broader data access and collaboration, Devon Energy implemented Snowflake with dbt Labs’ dbt to standardize SQL-based transformations, improve governance through version control, and support a domain-driven self-service model. With dbt Labs and Snowflake, the company reallocated $10 million back into the business, cut regulatory reporting work by three weeks, and expanded data modeling collaboration from 15 to nearly 30 contributors while reducing the enterprise build team to three people.
