Hormel Foods Corporation, a global food company based in Austin, Minnesota with nearly 20,000 employees, aimed to boost employee wellness and lower medical costs. An earlier participation-based program produced only 40–60% engagement, so Hormel needed a new approach that would give employees a real stake in improving their health.
Hormel piloted an outcome-based program that required employees to meet health targets or improve scores/complete education to avoid penalties, and integrated Ceridian LifeWorks resources — webinars, mobile app, website and call center — for coaching and education. Participation rose to 90% and LifeWorks utilization grew 170%; the company reports reduced absenteeism, higher productivity, lower health-care expenses and growing intrinsic motivation among employees.
