A Davis Instruments Case Study
Franklin County Emergency Management (FCEM) faced a significant challenge ensuring driver safety on the four-mile St. George Island Bridge, where sudden, high winds created dangerous conditions and often led to reactive and costly closures. To gain timely, actionable data, FCEM engaged weather-intelligence provider WeatherSTEM, who initially implemented a monitoring system using equipment from vendor Davis Instruments.
The solution was significantly upgraded using Davis Instruments' WeatherLink Live, which could receive data from multiple sensors. WeatherSTEM installed six additional anemometers along the bridge span, using Davis transmitters and repeaters to send real-time wind data to the WeatherLink Live. This gave FCEM a complete profile of wind conditions across the entire bridge, representing a monumental leap in data capabilities and a substantial improvement to transportation safety management, all for a Davis equipment package costing less than $6,000.
