New Hanover County relocates Mason Inlet 3,000 ft north with Davey

New Hanover County in North Carolina faced severe erosion risks to properties and infrastructure due to the accelerated southward migration of Mason Inlet at Wrightsville Beach. To mitigate this, they planned to relocate the inlet, a project that required navigating complex environmental regulations concerning sensitive coastal habitats. They engaged Davey Resource Group (DRG), a division of Davey Tree, for environmental consulting and permitting services.

Davey Resource Group provided comprehensive environmental site evaluations, prepared the Environmental Assessment, and secured the necessary federal permits. Their experts designed a tidal salt marsh mitigation plan to offset habitat impacts and managed the restoration of a dredge disposal island. The successful project allowed for the safe inlet relocation and beneficial reuse of sand for beach nourishment. DRG's work achieved significant cost savings for the County by concluding hydrologic monitoring early, and they continue to provide long-term biological monitoring for the restored areas.
