A Davey Case Study
Hoosier Energy, a public utility serving over 842,000 customers in the Mid-Atlantic, needed to better manage vegetation around power lines to ensure reliability, as trees cause many service interruptions. A key challenge was tracking trees and accurately delineating wetlands within their extensive rights-of-way to protect natural resources during maintenance. They engaged Davey Tree’s Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. (WSSI) for environmental consulting and delineation services.
Davey's WSSI team delineated wetlands and Waters of the U.S. along hundreds of miles of transmission and distribution rights-of-way, flagging boundaries and tree locations. Using Trimble GPS units, they captured electronic data for planners. This enabled precise, permit-aware vegetation management, improving planning and environmental protection. The utility could now maintain reliable service while safeguarding natural resources, with a Hoosier Energy representative noting the partnership has been "win-win all around."
