A Davey Case Study
A major Midwest electric utility, Hoosier Energy, sought to improve safety culture within a specific division responsible for line clearance work. Their challenge was to address a notoriously poor safety culture among the vendors in that division, despite the utility's broader commitment to top-quartile safety performance. They called on Davey, a utility vegetation management provider, for a solution.
Davey implemented a rotating safety mentor program, where one crew member per shift wore a distinctive beanie and was responsible for monitoring and enforcing safe practices, including educating visitors. This program fostered greater crew buy-in and accountability. As a result of Davey's program, the utility saw safety incidents in the targeted area reduce by half, earning commendation from the utility's management and making safety a top priority.
