The utility Dominion Energy needed to avoid unpredictable forestry costs and schedule delays during the construction of a new overhead electric transmission right-of-way. They partnered with Davey Resource Group (DRG), a division of Davey, to find a solution for accurately estimating clearing costs.

Davey's team used drone-captured LiDAR data combined with the utility's 3D PLS CADD maps to identify potential hazard trees outside the planned construction area. This data, processed and delivered within three weeks for 20 line miles, allowed Dominion to obtain precise clearing costs and proactively remove risks. The solution helped Dominion avoid potential schedule delays and has revolutionized how they plan to use LiDAR data throughout their operations.
