Case Study: Caltrans improves tree safety and wildfire readiness with Davey Resource Group

Caltrans assesses 15,000+ tree hazards across 300+ miles with Davey

The customer, Caltrans, faced a significant public safety challenge due to dead and diseased trees along its rights-of-way across California, a problem exacerbated by severe drought. To mitigate tree-related damage and address safety concerns, Caltrans engaged vendor Davey Resource Group (DRG), a division of Davey Tree, to conduct tree health assessments and create an inventory.

Davey Resource Group implemented a solution using its in-house Rover software on field tablets for efficient data collection. DRG mobilized a team of specialists to perform surveys, collecting over 15,000 data points across more than 300 miles of state routes. The results included detailed site maps and data files for public review, as well as GIS support to create priority mapping for fuel reduction work to aid in wildfire safety. Davey's work provided Caltrans with the analytical support needed for its ongoing initiative to prevent damage and ensure public safety.
