Bear Valley Electric Service (BVES), a utility serving communities in the San Bernardino Mountains, faced the challenge of demonstrating regulatory compliance for its distribution grid's minimum clearances as part of its Wildfire Mitigation Plan. BVES partnered with Davey Resource Group, Inc. (DRG), a division of Davey Tree, to perform an innovative LiDAR data analysis, a solution not widely used for distribution systems at the time.

Davey implemented a solution involving mobile roadside LiDAR data collection for 211 miles of distribution line. Their team enhanced their GIS and data processing capabilities to handle the high-density data, conducted 3D spatial analysis to classify vegetation encroachments, and performed tree canopy health assessments. The results provided BVES with actionable data to target problem areas, prioritize work, and ensure its system remains compliant and safe, fulfilling its mission of providing reliable power.
