MSP Recovers 85K Files from a Ransomware Attack

MTM Computer Consulting, a California-based MSP, was called in when a property management client was struck by a sophisticated ransomware delivered in a malicious zip file that bypassed email security, DNS blocking and antivirus. The malware encrypted local and shared resources—including a Construction folder with 85,000 files—while the infected user shut down their laptop and never saw a ransom demand, leaving internal IT initially unaware.

Using a Datto SIRIS appliance and Instant Virtualization, MTM immediately spun up the most recent backup, virtualized the server locally on the device and restored the recovered data, returning the client to operation with zero downtime and full recovery of the 85,000 files. The same workflow stopped a repeat attack a week later, and MTM has since tightened its ZIP-file policies to reduce future risk.
