Novus Modernizes Databases on AWS Achieving Improved Performance, Availability & Cost

Novus Partners is a portfolio intelligence platform that digitizes Investment Books of Record and supports institutional investors. Their monolithic SQL Server database running on an AWS EC2 instance was strained by rapidly growing terabytes of data, causing scalability, reliability and rising Windows/SQL Server licensing costs that threatened customer-facing applications and total cost of ownership. Novus Partners engaged DatAvail, who had previously assisted with AWS migrations, to address these challenges.

DatAvail led a migration to Amazon RDS MySQL, using the AWS Schema Conversion Tool alongside manual code conversion, custom data-migration scripts, and multiple rounds of performance and functional testing. By segregating functionality from the monolithic database and moving to RDS MySQL, DatAvail helped Novus Partners achieve equal or better performance, improved availability (leveraging RDS Multi-AZ), greater scalability, and substantially lower licensing costs—RDS open-source engines can cost roughly one‑tenth of SQL Server.
