Major Utility Company Moves Residential Customer Website to Azure Cloud

Major Utility Company, one of Canada’s largest electricity transmitters and distributors, faced an outdated customer website that produced just 8% e-billing adoption—well below industry norms—while new regulations requiring monthly billing threatened to double mailing costs. The site also suffered from poor mobile responsiveness, accessibility issues, and limited scalability during storms and outages. Datavail was engaged to modernize the front-facing site and migrate the solution to the Microsoft Azure cloud while addressing regulatory (FERC/NERC) and data sovereignty requirements.

Datavail delivered a full “application as a service” solution: a redesigned .NET/Angular front end with SharePoint CMS, hosted on Azure using IaaS and PaaS services (including Azure Cache for Redis, VMs, Virtual Networking, VPN Gateway, Storage, Key Vault, and Load Balancers). The redesign and cloud architecture increased e-billing and self-service adoption from 8% to 44%, placed the site in the top quartile for mobile experience, and enabled on-demand scaling for peak events; Datavail continues to provide ongoing support and management.
