A DataStax Case Study
SkillPages, founded in 2010, helps people find skilled professionals by mapping skills and real-world connections for a global user base that has grown to about 18 million. As its SkillGraph needed to rapidly analyze massive volumes of data (billions of relevance entities, social data from Facebook and Google, and tens of gigabytes of telemetry daily) the company outgrew relational databases and required a much faster, more scalable way to serve relevance, geography and mutual-connection queries in real time.
SkillPages adopted DataStax Enterprise (Cassandra with Hadoop, Solr and enterprise tools), ran it in parallel with the old system, then expanded its cluster and tuned instances with Amazon SSDs. The move delivered higher write throughput, smoother “graceful failure” behavior, and allowed migration of additional services without adding engineering headcount, keeping the platform scalable and supported as the company pursues further search and analytics features.
