Penn Mutual Simplifies Storage and Access to 150 Years of Data with DataStax Enterprise

Penn Mutual, a life insurance and annuities company founded in 1847, faced the challenge of consolidating nearly 150 years of historical data scattered across mainframes, relational databases and other legacy systems. That fragmentation caused inconsistent information, trust issues and poor performance and scalability with their initial RDBMS-based Core Services approach, blocking analytics and more nimble, personalized services.

Penn Mutual migrated to DataStax Enterprise (a 6‑node Cassandra ring with integrated Apache Solr and OpsCenter), gaining linear scalability, reliable performance and ad‑hoc search capabilities. The platform created a single authoritative data source, enabled holistic policy views and faster reporting, and unlocked new internal and external applications—empowering agents with personalized customer insights and supporting broader analytics and innovation.
