i2O Water Tackles Water Crisis with Apache Cassandra

i2O Water helps utility companies cut leakage and pipe bursts by using IoT smart-pressure systems that capture high-velocity time-series data. Facing rapid growth (over 1.5 TB of sensor data and increasing), the company found Microsoft SQL Server unable to scale or provide the near-real-time performance and cross-data-center availability required for its global deployments.

i2O migrated to Apache Cassandra, a masterless, time-series-friendly distributed database that scales predictably and maintains continuous availability. The move delivered 50–60k writes/sec and 20–40k reads/sec, supports 15,000+ devices across 20+ countries with >99.9% uptime, and enabled measurable impact: ~235 million liters of water saved per day, 40% fewer burst pipes, and roughly 20% reductions in both leakage and pumping energy use.
