Healthx - Customer Case Study

Healthx, a B2B developer of self-service portals for payers (serving 130+ payers and 39,000 groups), was struggling with slow, index-poor text searches in its cloud-hosted provider directory. Its Microsoft SQL servers couldn’t efficiently handle complex lookups (for example, finding a female, German-speaking podiatrist nearby), and the team wanted a highly available, low‑maintenance database solution certified for real‑time workloads.

Healthx deployed DataStax Enterprise 2.0 (Apache Cassandra with integrated Apache Solr and Hadoop) on a small cluster and updated its data‑access layer to route requests between SQL and DSE. The combined Cassandra+Solr setup delivered full redundancy and fast full‑text indexing, improving provider search performance, reducing load on production SQL, and enabling plans to shift logging and analytics to Cassandra/Hadoop—simplifying operations and enabling more advanced, Google‑style search use cases.
