A DataStax Case Study
HealthCare Anytime is a San Diego–based SaaS provider of web portals that help healthcare organizations manage patient engagement and operations. By 2012 the company faced an “avalanche” of semi-structured and unstructured patient data—growing from tens of thousands to millions of records per day—and its relational databases were becoming a bottleneck, causing slow, faulty searches and risking poor patient and provider experiences.
HealthCare Anytime moved to a cloud-hosted DataStax Enterprise solution (a six-node Cassandra cluster with Solr) that was operational within days, giving real-time, analytic, and search capabilities in one platform. The change delivered a 100x improvement in search/performance, cut per-record search times to 1–2 seconds, sped uploads/access by ~87–89%, avoided $750K in IT/support costs, and is projected to yield a 398% ROI and $600K net benefit over five years while enabling scalable, user-friendly patient portals and greater vendor-agnostic flexibility.
