Implementation of Next Generation Fare System (NGFS) for Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) to Enhance Reliablility & Customer Experience

The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) needed to modernize its aging magnetic-card and farebox ticketing to deliver The Memphis 3.0 Transit Vision: an account-based, contactless fare system for buses, trolleys and paratransit. Datamatics was engaged to replace outdated hardware and fragmented processes with a secure, ADA-compliant Next Generation Fare System (NGFS) supporting smartcards and mobile app–based account fares.

Datamatics designed, delivered and commissioned the NGFS—including on-board fare collection, optical smartmedia validators, handheld validators, ticket vending machines, a central management and reporting system, retail network integration, QR/thermal single-journey tickets and mobile app payments—integrated with MATA’s issuer/acquirer and PSP gateway. The solution gives MATA real-time passenger data for better planning, a unified account-based experience that reduces frequent ticket purchases, and faster contactless boarding that improves service efficiency and reliability.
