Free Law Project, A US based Non-Profit Company Migrates to AWS Cloud and Enhanced its Scalability

Free Law Project is a nonprofit that makes court records and legal data widely accessible through its CourtListener service. As usage exploded—from hundreds of daily page views to spikes of 3.7 million on politically charged days—and the archive grew to include 2.5 million minutes of oral arguments, more than 16,000 judges, and 6.6 million opinions, the organization faced storage, scaling, security, and email‑deliverability challenges. Free Law Project engaged Datamatics (an AWS Advanced Partner) to help address these needs.

Datamatics assessed Free Law Project’s architecture and led a cloud‑first migration to the AWS Cloud, recommending cloud‑native designs and services such as Amazon EKS, Amazon RDS, Amazon S3, and Amazon SES. As a result, Free Law Project now reliably handles viral traffic and large-scale API use without downtime, has scalable backups and storage for millions of documents and hours of audio, improved email deliverability, and stronger security — enabling the team to focus on expanding access to legal information.
