Waitrose & Partners rolls out customer-facing scanning across all stores with Datalogic

Waitrose & Partners, a UK supermarket chain, sought to address customer anxiety about having to hand over their mobile phones at checkout to scan barcodes from shopping apps and loyalty cards. They partnered with vendor Datalogic to find a solution that would allow data exchange without the phone leaving the customer's hand, aiming to improve convenience and encourage app usage.

Datalogic implemented its Gryphon GFS4400 customer-facing scan engine, mounted under the pin entry device at checkouts. This solution allowed customers to scan barcodes directly from their smartphone screens, with successful scans confirmed by a green light and audible tone. The result gave customers complete control of their devices, streamlined the checkout process, and helped Waitrose provide an exemplary in-store experience. Datalogic's technology successfully empowered the customer and supported the retailer's innovation goals.
