Waitrose & Partners Lead the Way With Customer Facing Scanners

Waitrose & Partners, the UK supermarket chain, wanted to improve its smartphone-based shopping experience while addressing customer anxiety about handing over their phones at checkout. The retailer needed a way to let customers scan loyalty IDs or app-generated barcodes from their smartphone screen without passing the device to staff, and turned to Datalogic for help.

Datalogic implemented the Gryphon GFS4400 customer-facing scan engine, mounted under the pin entry device at manned checkouts with a customised solution from Ergonomic Solutions. The scanners read 1D and 2D barcodes directly from mobile screens, confirming successful scans with Green Spot technology and helping speed up checkout while keeping customers in control of their phones. Waitrose & Partners said the solution streamlined the checkout and improved the in-store experience, though no specific quantitative results were provided.
