Toyota-South Africa tracks 500 vehicles with Datalogic RFID for real-time paint shop control

Toyota-South Africa (S.A.), a market-leading automotive manufacturer, needed to replace its slow and error-prone manual Job Card system with a real-time Automatic Tracking System for its production and distribution processes. The challenge required a robust data capture solution capable of surviving harsh plant conditions. They turned to vendor Datalogic Automation for a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) solution.

Datalogic Automation implemented an RFID system using their HMS820 Reader/Writers, MM80 MicroMux module, and durable HMS150HT tags. These tags withstand extreme temperatures and chemical exposures, enabling real-time vehicle tracking through the paint shop and providing maintenance data for equipment. The solution gave Toyota accurate, real-time work-in-process information, significantly reduced paperwork delays, and supported future expansion. Johan Stoop, General Manager at Toyota S.A., confirmed the system works great and that they are proceeding with a second phase of implementation.
