Tallink launches onboard self-shopping with Datalogic in just 2 hours of travel time

Tallink, an Estonian shipping company, faced a challenge with long checkout queues deterring passengers from shopping during their short ferry trips between Helsinki and Tallinn, causing a loss of revenue. To address this, they partnered with vendor Datalogic and their business partner Nixor to implement a self-shopping solution using the Datalogic Joya X2 handheld scanner.

The solution was later expanded using Datalogic's advanced Joya Touch mobile devices and Shopevolution 7 middleware, creating a self-service purchasing system called Q-Shopping. This allowed passengers to scan items themselves and pay quickly at dedicated kiosks. For Datalogic, the results were a faster, more enjoyable shopping experience for customers, a reduction in queues at standard counters, and freed-up staff who could provide assistance elsewhere. The successful pilot on one vessel led to the system being deployed on a second ship, the Megastar.
