Seagate Technology achieves 100% reliability on disk cleaning line with Datalogic

Seagate Technology, a global manufacturer of disc drives, faced a challenge in achieving 100% reliability in its automated disk cleaning line. Prior methods, including manual input and barcode technology, led to human errors, unreadable labels, and product scrap. Seagate required a totally controlled process with real-time tracking and a permanent record for each disc cassette, a challenge they tasked their conveyor system manufacturer, Stratus Automation, to solve using Datalogic's Escort Memory Systems RFID technology.

The solution implemented by Datalogic used HF-0405 RFID controllers and GWY TCP Ethernet interfaces to read and write to tags embedded in the product cassettes. This provided 100% reliability by ensuring correct routing at every decision point on the conveyor and catching any out-of-sequence cassettes in real-time before they were mis-processed. The results showed over 15,000 read/write cycles without a single failure, drastically reducing wiring, enabling fast setup, and most importantly, eliminating scrap by preventing processing errors.
