A Datalogic Case Study
NHS Tayside Central Decontamination Unit (CDU) in Dundee, Scotland, needed a way to improve traceability of reusable surgical instruments and prepare for UDI requirements, ensuring each item could be tracked through decontamination and back into the patient pathway. To meet this challenge, NHS Tayside worked with Datalogic and its Ulyxe laser marking system, via Sciamed and Laser Lines, to mark unique GS1 GTIN barcodes onto instruments made from different materials and sizes.
Datalogic’s Ulyxe laser marking solution was implemented with a suitable workstation and staff training, enabling durable, high-quality marks that would not be affected by the decontamination process and required no consumables. The system integrated seamlessly with NHS Tayside’s tracking and traceability process, supported prevention of high-risk instrument migration, and proved more cost effective than label-based identification, which would have needed replacement every two years.
