A Datalogic Case Study
Venice Marco Polo Airport, Italy’s third largest airport system, needed to modernize its baggage handling operations to support growing passenger volumes, improve baggage traceability, and strengthen security. To meet these demands, the airport turned to Datalogic for automatic identification technology to read baggage barcodes quickly and accurately across a high-volume sorting environment.
Datalogic implemented omni-directional baggage sorting stations using DS8100 and DX8200 laser scanners with SC8000 controllers, plus Dragon handheld readers for final checks in the loading bays. The solution used ACR™ for damaged or poorly printed codes, PackTrack™ for correct suitcase assignment, and zero-downtime redundancy with hot back-up controllers to ensure uninterrupted operation. As a result, Venice Marco Polo Airport improved sorting efficiency and security, reduced manual handling, and cut baggage transit time while supporting capacity growth from 4.4 million to 6 million passengers per year.
