Fiumicino Airport - Customer Case Study

Fiumicino Airport, a major Italian airport handling over 33 million passengers a year, faced a significant challenge with lost luggage, which caused passenger inconvenience and substantial financial losses for its airline partners. To increase its level of passenger service during a modernization phase, the airport sought a solution for full baggage traceability and partnered with Datalogic and Sita.

Datalogic Automation provided its advanced automatic bar code reading system, including nearly 200 DS8100A and DX8200A laser scanners and SC6000 controllers, installed in reading tunnels at key points in the baggage handling system. This solution enabled the accurate tracking of each bag from the aircraft hold to the passenger carousel, allowing the airport to monitor handling times and system performance. As a result, Fiumicino Airport greatly decreased the problem of lost luggage and the consequential costs for the airlines.
