Bologna Airport Selects Datalogic’s Bar Code Readers to Control Airport Access and Enhance Passenger Security

Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport required a new access control solution to improve security and the passenger experience at its security gates. The airport needed a cordless, rugged scanner capable of accurately reading PDF417 bar codes on various types of boarding passes. Datalogic, through partner Arc Data, provided its PowerScan PM8500 2D bar code readers to meet this challenge.

The implemented Datalogic solution enables rapid, secure verification of boarding passes, instantly providing operators with a color-coded access response. This has dramatically improved security and saved approximately 1,700 employee hours in six months by reducing each verification by an average of five seconds. The Datalogic system also future-proofs operations, allowing the airport to manage peak traffic of over 8,500 daily passengers and paving the way for further applications like baggage management.
