Automatic Data Entry Replaces Paper-Based Patient Record System for Better Patient Care

Wythenshawe Hospital, a major UK hospital, faced challenges with its error-prone and time-consuming paper-based system for patient records. The manual data entry process created risks to patient safety and opened the hospital to potential legal complications. To address this, the hospital selected Datalogic and its Gryphon Desk barcode readers to automate data entry and improve record accuracy.

The solution implemented by Datalogic, configured with the help of partner Kelgray, allowed hospital staff to scan barcodes to automatically retrieve and update electronic patient records. This eliminated manual keyboard entry, significantly reducing the possibility of life-threatening errors. The results included the ability to accurately track patients from admittance to discharge and the prevention of misplaced files. Datalogic's solution also saved considerable public money by eliminating the need to manually re-label hundreds of thousands of existing records.
