Optum streamlines petabyte-scale data mesh with DataHub

Optum, a healthcare technology company, faced bottlenecks in data access and governance due to its centralized data platforms. These challenges slowed down engineering and analytics teams who needed to work with petabyte-scale data. To address this, Optum partnered with the vendor DataHub, migrating from DataHub Core to DataHub Cloud as part of their solution.

With DataHub, Optum built a decentralized data platform called Data Forge to operationalize a data mesh architecture. The solution leveraged DataHub's extensible metadata model, custom ingestion pipelines for internal systems, and real-time event-driven automation. This enabled secure, self-serve access to trusted data products, resulting in faster time to data for consumers, improved discoverability, and automated workflows like access provisioning and schema change notifications.
